New coverage for fertility preservation after a cancer diagnosis
Sjóvá has added new coverage to its Critical Illness Insurance that supports customers who need to undergo cancer treatment that may have harmful effects on fertility.
Sjóvá has added new coverage to its Critical Illness Insurance that supports customers who need to undergo cancer treatment that may have harmful effects on fertility.
The new coverage, fertility preservation, took effect on July 1, 2026 and is intended for individuals with Critical Illness Insurance at Sjóvá who require medication and/or radiation therapy due to a compensable cancer diagnosis. If the treatment may have harmful effects on fertility (according to a physician’s assessment), the coverage can cover the cost of freezing sperm, eggs, or embryos and their storage for up to three years.
“When someone is diagnosed with cancer, they often need to make many major decisions in a short period of time. With this coverage, we want to ease the burden on our customers during a difficult time and support those who want to preserve their ability to have children later in life,” says Steinunn Guðjónsdóttir, Managing Director of Sjóvá Life Insurance.
The coverage reimburses expenses, after deducting any contributions from the Icelandic Health Insurance and labour unions. The maximum reimbursement for the coverage is ISK 500,000 per individual. It applies to insured individuals aged 50 and younger and also extends to children of the insured under 18, if they need to undergo such treatment due to compensable cancer. The coverage is automatically included in all our Critical Illness Insurance policies, at no cost to customers, and no action is required from them.
Partnership with Kraftur
Sjóvá is introducing this coverage in collaboration with Kraftur, an organization that supports young people diagnosed with cancer. For years, Kraftur has played an important role in supporting young people diagnosed with cancer and raising awareness of the challenges that can come with diagnosis and treatment.
Through this collaboration, Sjóvá and Kraftur aim to increase awareness of the importance of fertility preservation and ensure that people receive information and support when such decisions need to be made.

With this new coverage, Sjóvá seeks to further strengthen their Critical Illness Insurances and meet the real needs of their customers when it matters most.
