Ljósafoss, the light walk for Ljósið Cancer Rehabilitation Center, took place on Saturday, November 15th, in beautiful weather. The walk saw record participation with around 900 people taking part in lighting up Esja.
This year’s Ljósafoss was the brightest to date. 1,800,000 ISK was raised during the walk, since Sjóvá contributed ISK 2,000 for each participant. All the walkers deserve heartfelt thanks for drawing attention to the invaluable rehabilitation work of Ljósið, the fight of those battling cancer, and for remembering those we have lost to cancer.
Þorsteinn Jakobsson, also known as Fjalla-Steini, led the walk. Over 15 years ago, he came up with the idea to establish an annual light walk to brighten the darkness for a good cause. This became Ljósafoss, which has truly become an established tradition.
This year, participants enjoyed a calm November evening. Möndlubásinn was present, offering aromatic almonds and hot cocoa for sale. Beautiful candles and headlamps were also available, with proceeds going to Ljósið. The Kjölur Search and Rescue Team supported Ljósið during the event, allowing participants to enjoy the walk worry-free while supporting a good cause.
We look forward to repeating the event next year and remind everyone that it is possible to become a Ljósavinur (a friend of Ljósið) and support Ljósið’s operations with a monthly donation.
