The Claims Database is a shared database of insurance companies in Iceland. Its purpose is to prevent insurance fraud and it is based on a Nordic model. Creditinfo acts as the data processor for the database, while each insurance company is the data controller for the claims information it registers in the database.
All claims reported to the participating insurance companies are recorded in the database, and the customer is informed about the registration when reporting the claim and in the company’s terms and conditions. Claims falling under Life Insurance and Critical Illness Insurance, as well as claims involving children under the age of 15, are not recorded in the database.
The information that may be recorded in the database includes: the name of the insurance company, the claimant’s ID number, the case number at the company, the type of insurance, the type of claim, the date of the claim, the date of registration in the database, the location of the claim, and a unique identifier of the insured item, such as a vehicle registration number.
It is not permitted to register additional information in the Claims Database, such as specific health-related details in connection with personal injury claims.
Access to the Claims Database is controlled, and only employees of insurance companies who register claims and handle claim settlements have access to the information.
It is possible to obtain an overview of searches relating to you in the database through Creditinfo’s Customer Portal. If your information is accessed in the database, you will also receive a notification of the first lookup from Creditinfo.
Yes, the Claims Database is operated in accordance with laws on data protection and the processing of personal data, originally with authorization from the Data Protection Authority. According to the law, personal data may be processed if it is necessary to protect legitimate interests.
Information about individuals registered in the Claims Database is kept to a minimum, and data is systematically deleted from the database (no later than 10 years from registration).
