Driving Abroad

• Mandatory vehicle insurance is valid in Iceland and in other EEA member states as well as Switzerland. The countries that are part of the EEA, in addition to Iceland, include Liechtenstein, Norway, and the member states of the European Union (EU) (see further information). If you plan to drive your vehicle in these countries, we recommend that you carry a so-called Green Card.
• The Green Card is proof that liability insurance (which is part of the mandatory vehicle insurance) is in effect for the vehicle. You can download the Green Card in the Sjóvá app undir "Cards" or on My Sjóvá. If you need assistance requesting the Green Card, please contact us via live chat, by phone at 440 2000, or at sjova@sjova.is There is no charge for the Green Card.
• Comprehensive Collision Insurance (Kaskótrygging) is valid during travel in Europe for up to 90 days and during necessary transport between countries. If you plan to stay in Europe for more than 90 days, you can purchase an add-on to extend the comprehensive insurance. Note that comprehensive insurance does not cover losses due to theft abroad, but you can purchase additional coverage for theft abroad.

In countries that are part of the Green Card system:

• If you are traveling to countries outside the European Economic Area, you can request a Green Card for countries that are part of the Green Card agreement. Here you can see which countries are members of the Green Card system. If you plan to drive your vehicle in any of these countries, it is essential to carry the Green Card.
• The Green Card is proof that liability insurance (which is part of the mandatory vehicle insurance) is in effect for the vehicle. You can request the Green Card on Mitt Sjóvá. If you need assistance requesting the Green Card, please contact us via live chat, by phone at 440 2000, or at sjova@sjova.is. There is no charge for the Green Card.
• Comprehensive Collision Insurance (Kaskótrygging) is valid during travel in Europe for up to 90 days and during necessary transport between countries. If you plan to travel in Europe for more than 90 days, you can purchase an extension to the comprehensive insurance. Note that comprehensive insurance does not cover loss due to theft abroad, but you can buy additional theft coverage for travel abroad.

In countries that are not part of the Green Card system:

• If you are traveling to countries that are not members of the Green Card agreement (e.g. the United States or Canada), we cannot offer insurance coverage for those areas.
• If you take a vehicle to countries that are not part of the Green Card system, you must contact insurance companies in those countries to insure the vehicle.
